At exactly 11:00PM on June 17, 2021, residents in the area experienced something which seemed like an earthquake due to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) tanker explosion at Total Filling station, close to Sheraton Hotel and OPIC (Ogun State Property Investment Company Plaza) building, on Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja, Lagos state. According to a source, the cause of the explosion was from a leaking gas tanker at the Total Gas Station. The gas tanker was leaking during an offload at the filling station.
According to the source, all the lodgers at Sheraton Hotel dashed out of their rooms as they seek safety in a protected and unaffected areas.
Few minutes after the explosion and fire outbreak, firefighters arrived at the scene and saved the night by working tirelessly to quench the huge fire.
A source tells Kossyderrickent:
“Apparently a leaking gas tanker exploded, caused great alarm, potentially OPIC might be slightly affected, I can’t see much from my standpoint, I also don’t know if there are causalties. Stay safe everyone.”
Updated: Information reaching Kossyderrickent has it that no fewer than 13 people have been rushed to a General Hospital, after sustaining fire burns during fire outbreak.
Another eyewitness says:
“The fire was caused by a leaking gas tanker that broke down just after Total Filling station at around 10:30pm causing panic at the filling station that made both staff and customers flee for their lives.
“Repeated calls to the Lagos state fire service for preemptive measures proved abortive until the tanker exploded at about 11:PM and the resulting inferno quickly spread around, especially into the plaza after the filling station.
“A gallant effort from the Lagos state fire service when did arrive curtailed the rage of the fire and arguably prevented further damage.”
Ibrahim Farinloye, Acting Zonal Coordinator, South-West Zonal Office, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ikeja on Friday.
“The resulting fire travelled with the wind to the premises of Ogun State Property Investment Company (OPIC) Plaza besides Sheraton Hotels, which houses different commercial outfits including a Chinese Restaurant.
“The fire was put out at about 12.30 a.m., after concerted efforts of five fire trucks from the Lagos State Fire Service and two trucks from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency Response Unit.
“The initial search and rescue activities revealed that 13 persons sustained various degrees of burns. Out of this, nine are males while four are females,” Ibrahim said.
Lagos state commissioner of police, Hakeem Odumosu has visited the scene of the incident with other officials of the Lagos state government.
