Information reaching Kossyderrickent has it that Somali runner, Nasra Ali Bashir, is an untrained, inexperience and chubby, who came late at World University Games in China.
The taxpayers of Britain, Europe, and America provide funding to African leaders, some of whom are dictators or corrupt. Somalia is an example of how nepotism and corruption can thrive, as evidenced by the Somalia Athletics Federation vice president selecting her own niece over another girl who trained for 5 years. The question is raised over how long Western nations will continue to provide aid given these issues. People need to start advocating stopping aid and instead focusing on capacity building, noting the proverb about teaching a man to fish versus just providing fish. The argument is that aid should focus more on developing self-sufficiency and progress in Africa rather than indefinitely supporting incompetent leaders. I believe aid should empower local populations rather than prop up broken governments.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports should step down. It’s disheartening to witness such an incompetent government. How could they select an untrained girl to represent Somalia in running? It’s truly shocking and reflects poorly on our country internationally.
Somalia in the news as Somali athlete, Nasra Ali Bashir, went viral for her terrible performance in a 100m race at the World University Games in China.
Somalia’s Ministry of Sports and Youth pledged to investigate the selection process that led to an unprepared athlete to represent the country at the International Federation of University Sports’ (FISU) World University Games in Chengdu, China. The controversy is linked to Nasra Abukar, a 20-year-old with little running experience, who finished last in the 100m race, sparking criticism, especially from Somalis around the world.
The controversy has escalated amid allegations of favoritism involving Abukar’s alleged family connection to Khadija Aden Dahir , the president of the Somali Athletics Federation, after social media users in Somalia spotted a possible connection by tapping into a message congratulations posted by Dahir on his personal Facebook page to celebrate Abukar’s graduation.
In an attempt to quell the outrage, Sports Minister Mohamed Barre pledged to identify those responsible for what he called “an embarrassment” for the country. “What happened is not appropriate for the Somali community. I am sorry. We apologize to the Somali people”, said the Minister of Youth and Sports Mohamed Barre, before issuing a strong warning to the country’s sports associations: “I demand more awareness because they have inappropriately selected the athletes for the competitions in China and I will hold the interested party accountable,” Minister Barre continued.
Mohamed Barre, Minister of Youth and Sports of Somalia, stated that the athlete was not sent by the ministry and announced that an investigation was launched regarding the selection process.
Barre, who apologized to the Somalis, said, “Even though he competed for Somalia, this competition was not a national competition, it was held for universities. For this reason, the Ministry has no role in his election and the path followed.”
