Information reaching Kossyderrickent has it that Russell Westbrook distributing 1,000 meals to families in need on his 12th annual Thanksgiving Meal giveaway.

Now, when locals visit the Jesse Owens Park, they will see “Russell Westbrook Community Court” surrounding the center logo to honor his legacy in that neighborhood.

“Just to have my name in the middle, I hope it inspires and allows you guys — especially our kids and youth — to do great things in life,” Westbrook added. “Not just in basketball. I’m so grateful for this.”

The day culminated in Westbrook speaking to an audience in the gym, recounting his fondest memories and describing what it means for him to give back to his community.

“I just want to say that I’m grateful and thankful,” he said. “All of you guys, and the ones that came before me, all the ones that allow me to not only be at this park, but embrace it. I was telling someone a story, I used to come into this gym with my football gear on and play with my cleats on the basketball court … then go back on the football field. Played basketball at this park, went to the pool at this park. This park is my home. Everybody that’s around here understands how important it is to me.”

For most children that look up to players of Westbrook’s ilk and Hall-of-Fame résumé, it’s understandable if their long-term goals mirror his career. To the children who watch him 70-plus games each year, he’s a basketball player first and community figure second. It’s difficult for any young fan to think about the latter when he’s gliding up the court at breakneck speed and still delivering thunderous dunks as if he’s still 20 years old.

This tradition dates back to 2012 when Westbrook established the ‘Why Not?’ foundation. Beyond inspiring young adults, Westbrook is actively involved in charitable initiatives that make a difference, not only in inspiring young adults but also in providing assistance to toddlers.

Illustrating his commitment to philanthropy, Westbrook’s contributions extend beyond Thanksgiving. Last Christmas, he donated 400 pairs of shoes to students at Westbrook Academy, showcasing his dedication to making a positive impact.
