Nigerian Politician, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has officially been appointed as the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). She was appointed a few hours ago.






Nigerians and a few politicians, such as: Governor Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta State), have taken to social media to congratulate her on her new appointment. The competition ended the moment South Korea’s Yoo Myhung Hee stepped down from the race. 


Sharing the information to the world, WTO, took to its official Twitter to announce the appointment of Ngozi Iweala-Okonjo. She has officially become the first woman and first African to lead/head the WTO. She resumes/takes office in 2 weeks time.


What are some of the issues awaiting Okonjo-Iweala when she takes office?


1. Advancing WTO reforms.

2. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on trade and economic growth.

3. Ongoing negotiations, including on fisheries subsidiaries.

Okonjo-Iweala was Nigeria’s Finance Minister, a Senior World Bank official and a chairperson of Gavi, The Vaccine Alliances Board. Congratulations ma!
