“As a doula, student midwife, mother, and woman, I am passionate about bringing the joy and autonomy back to birth!
Child bearing is a rite of passage and should be a joyous and empowering occasion to all who encompass it. Unfortunately, in the world we live in, this is not so.
“Obstetrics has marginalized Black and minority women since its origin and the evidence is clear- black women are significantly (3-4x!!!) more likely to die due to childbirth and pregnancy related complications than our white counterparts!
“It’s easy to be convinced that biology is to blame for our heightened chances of an unfavorable pregnancy outcome without even questioning it.
In doing so, we relinquish control to a system that was not established to serve minorities but, rather to use them as a catalyst to further their own agenda.
And when we allow ourselves to overlook our own ancestral knowledge that far outdates any healthcare system, once again, modern medicine becomes the hero.
“While it’s not my opinion that hospitals and doctors are evil or that they exist solely to ensure our demise, a system built on control, cannot truly hold space for women and their intuitive power to birth their babies.
“Until we take ownership in our own births we will continue to fall victim to the decisions of those around us.
We can no longer outsource our pregnancy and birth experience!
As women, we are strong, we are capable, we are powerful; the birth stories of our lineage live within our bones.
And if the world is not willing to hear our voices, we need to be willing to hear our own.
