Interview shows Peter Obi worked with Sani Abacha.

We have a crisis, a crisis; and that’s why I am pleading for all of us to take back our country. It’s our own; it’s not like any other country. When the leader is responsible to the people, they can question his rascality; his behavior must that of somebody who is sane and who wants to serve.”

The former governor of Anambra state and presidential candidate for the 2023 Nigerian election under the Labour Party, Peter Obi, made a significant revelation during an interview on “Dialogue with Presidential Candidates on the Nigerian Economy.” On Saturday evening, he emphasized the importance of leaders listening to the people and how this could change the outcome of the country.

During the interview, Mr. Obi shared an interesting story about how he became the chairman of Tin Can Island Port in Lagos during the late General Sani Abacha’s regime. According to Mr. Obi, Abacha wanted to arrest traders who failed to pay duty at the port.

Over 100 traders went to the presidential villa in Abuja to plead their case, and only 30 were allowed in to meet with the late president. Mr. Obi said that as he began to speak, Abacha slammed his table and called his ministers to make him the chairman of Tin Can Island Port in Lagos.

The purpose of sharing this story, according to Mr. Obi, was to demonstrate the impact of leaders who listen to the people. He recounted being told about a candidate who the people claimed lost everything while fighting the military dictatorship of Late General Sani Abacha suddenly became very rich overnight without a company to his name.

Obi who didn’t reveal the name of the candidate, however, questioned how he got the money to buy two planes without a known source of income. It is worth noting that Tin Can Island Port in Lagos is one of the busiest ports in Nigeria and plays a crucial role in the country’s economy. As the chairman of the port, Mr. Obi was responsible for overseeing the efficient operation of the port and ensuring that it was free of any obstacles that would hinder its productivity.

General Sani Abacha, who ruled Nigeria from 1993 to 1998, was known for his authoritarian rule and strict policies. However, Mr. Obi’s experience with Abacha shows that even a leader with a tough reputation can still listen to the people and make a positive impact.
