Gunman Slayem Slouma who opened fire in Brussels said he’s a member of ISIS, wanted to “avenge Muslims”


The victims are reported to be Swedish tourists who were in town for a Euro 2024 football match.


Allegedly, the assailant exclaimed the Arabic phrase “Allah hu Akbar,” which is sometimes translated as “God is great,” but in this context conveys the meaning of “Allah is greater [than your God].” As of now, the suspect remains at large.


Earlier in the day, Slayem Slouma had written a message about the Muslim child stabbed in Chicago this Sunday, explaining that if he had been a Christian, “we would have called it terrorism and not a brutal crime.”


A police spokesperson confirmed that two people had been killed in a shooting incident near the centre of the Belgian capital but declined to give further details.


A spokesperson for Brussels prosecutors, who are handling the case, also declined to give any details concerning the victims or any possible motive.


The newspaper said it was likely that they were two football fans. The Swedish national soccer team was scheduled to play Belgium at Heysel Stadium later in the evening, some 3 miles (5 kilometers) away.

Media reports aired amateur videos showing a man shooting several times near a station using a large weapon.


Police spokeswoman Ilse Vande Keere said officers arrived soon at the scene and sealed off the immediate neighborhood. She declined to elaborate on the circumstances of the shooting.


The shooting came at a time of increased vigilance linked to the ongoing tensions between Israel and Palestine that have heightened tension in several European nations. At the same time, the Belgian capital has been the scene of increased violence linked to increasing international drug trafficking.
