Fans theorize the smashed disco ball in the music video for Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” signaled the end of her disco era.
Dua Lipa on Greta Gerwig’s BARBIE: “Greta said that the whole film was inspired by disco. There’s a lot of very glittery and pop moments in it.”
The soundtrack for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie has been announced: Tame Impala, Haim, Charli XCX, and Ice Spice will all feature, as will Dua Lipa, who stars among the film’s supporting cast. Mark Ronson executive produced the soundtrack, and Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Pink Pantheress, and Khalid are on there, too. Ryan Gosling, the Ken to Margot Robbie’s Barbie, also features on the soundtrack on a cut called “I’m Just Ken.” Gosling will sing in character on the song, according to a press release. Barbie the Album is out via Atlantic the same day as the movie, July 21.
Of course, Dua Lipa — the film’s resident pop star who’s portraying Mermaid Barbie in the project — who previously announced her participation on the soundtrack, will be contributing a song called “Dance The Night,” which arrives Thursday evening. More surprising, though, is that another of the film’s stars is also billed as a featured artist: Ryan Gosling, who’s playing Ken opposite Margot Robbie’s titular character.
The news comes in the form of a very on-brand poster shared by the soundtrack’s official Instagram, showing Robbie in character reading a pink-tinted newspaper (Barbie News, obviously) with the names of the project’s musicians printed in twisty, hot pink letters. “More Barbies & Kens to be announced…” it teases at the bottom.
