He was in the wrong place at the wrong time, he says as he retells the story in court. When the incident happened, he was on his way back from a party in a taxi, fell asleep and got off at the wrong stop.
He had to find another way to res, he says.
The 21-year-old Varsity College student is facing charges of murder, premeditated murder, robbery, aggravated circumstances, and rape for the death of a pregnant teacher on 29 October.
The footage allegedly shows Mahungela leaving the area where the teacher’s body was found wearing her blue T-shirt.
The same footage also allegedly depicted the accused jumping over a locked gate at the Sandton Sports Club and captured him attempting to get rid of Kluyts’ clothes.
According to the state, Kluyts was struck with a blunt object before she was smothered and strangled until she died.
He was arrested on 26 November at res after a photo of him wearing a t-shirt of the late teacher was found. He told the court that he wore the teacher’s shirt because he didn’t want to leave his DNA at the scene of the incident after he had allegedly discovered the body.
Her body was found at George Lea Park in Parkmore hours after her disappearance.
The victim’s running shoes, sunglasses, blue T-shirt, pants, and pink cap were taken.
Mahungela was subsequently arrested at the Varsity College student residence in Benmore on 26 November after the police obtained video footage from the closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the vicinity of Parkmore.
