The disturbing video shared via Instagram Stories shows the unnamed University of Louisville student seasoning the live baby birds before cooking them in an air fryer, the Louisville Courier Journal reported. Other clips showed a dead chick hanging from the ceiling and another chick in the microwave.

The student allegedly claimed the chicks were robotic, but viewers didn’t buy the explanation, WDRB said.

The video was eventually reshared Saturday on Reddit, where the post said the individual was a student at the university’s J.B. Speed School of Engineering, the outlet reported.

The University of Louisville issued a statement Saturday disavowing the student’s actions and confirming that an investigation into the incident was ongoing.

“We are aware of an off-campus incident regarding a UofL student and alleged actions of animal cruelty,” the statement read.

In a recorded Instagram story the student was seen putting seasoning on a live chick inside an air fryer. ‘How to make fired chicken,’ they wrote in the caption. In another video, a bird appears to be dead inside the air fryer.

The school in Louisville tweeted over the weekend to say it was aware of an ‘off-campus incident’ involving ‘alleged actions of animal cruelty’.

‘We take reports of occurrences like this very seriously,’ read its update. ‘The university immediately relayed all relevant information to the appropriate authorities for further investigation,’ it added.

A University of Louisville student said she called police after seeing the videos.

‘It just gives you a grimy feeling, like I feel wrong for being able to see it,’ student Sarah Devers told WDRB.

She said she saw the video and did not doubt that the chicks were real. ‘Nice try trying to gaslight, I think anyone that has ever seen baby chicks before can tell that those are real living baby chicks,’ she said. Animal rights advocate Rebecca Eaves told WDRB she thought the behavior could lead to worse acts.

‘One thing that we always have to remember is there is a direct link from someone who will take innocent creatures and torture them,’ she said. ‘There is a direct link to other forms of cruelty, and it will escalate.’
