UG Lawyer wrote: “JUST IN: Malaysia’s Biggest Hospital- Kuala Lumpur Hospital has Today Admitted a Big Official From Uganda. The official’s Name has been withheld for Security Purposes.”

Now, Ugandans believe that the big official must be President Museveni.

The Twitter influencer wrote: “Uganda presidential jet missing.”

The Ugandan president, Yoweri Museveni, is to buy a new Gulfstream presidential jet for £24m after convincing MPs that his £16m plane bought seven years ago is out of date.

MPs on the presidential affairs committee approved the purchase this week after a presentation by Museveni’s chief pilot, who said the G5 jet would be cheaper to maintain and use less fuel. The plans have caused outrage in Uganda, where one in three people live on less than a dollar a day and donor funding is vital.

But Mary Karooro, who chairs the presidential committee, said the jet would be a “national asset”.

“We believe that this is not a luxury for the president,” she told the local New Vision newspaper. The Daily Mail newspaper reported that Lord Ashcroft said he had uncovered the use of aid money from Britain to buy the plane.

“The UK needs to be very careful before giving budgetary support to avoid extravagance such as this. It is simply a joke,” Ashcroft was quoted as saying. “We must make sure these things do not happen again.”

A spokesman for Museveni — who has been in power for 25 years and is coming under growing fire for what many see as an increasingly autocratic style of leadership — told Reuters the claims were untrue.

“We don’t need British money to buy jets,” Tamale Mirundi said. “That money was approved by parliament and British aid money is not approved through the Ugandan parliament.”
