Information reaching Kossyderrickent has it that Tony DeAngelo becomes the first player to be bought out twice as Flyers placed him on unconditional waivers.

The Philadelphia Flyers have placed defenseman Tony DeAngelo on unconditional waivers after one season with the club.

DeAngelo was traded from Carolina to Philadelphia last July and signed a two-year, $10 million contract days later. He scored 42 points with 31 assists in a career-high 70 contests last season to rank sixth on the Flyers, who finished 14th in the Eastern Conference and missed the playoffs for the third consecutive season.

Despite not getting along with Tortorella and being healthy scratched, DeAngelo at least had a solid season offensively with 11 goals, 31 assists, and 42 points in 70 games in 2022-23. However, his issues stem from his complete lack of a defensive game, as he ranked last among all NHLers in defensive goals above replacement with -15.1, resulting in the ninth-worst overall GAR with -9.5.

“Do I agree with it, what happened in the last five games? Absolutely not,” he told reporters after the season. “I think it’s ridiculous that I didn’t play in the last five. But he’s the coach of the team. It’s not my job to decide that.”

The Flyers tried to earlier send DeAngelo back to Carolina, but the NHL said no because it was less than a year since he was dealt from the Hurricanes to the Flyers and the deal would have included salary retention.

DeAngelo was a former 19th-overall pick for the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2014, but was dealt to the Arizona Coyotes for a second-round pick before he made his NHL debut in the 2016-17 season. He was then traded to the New York Rangers, where he played for four seasons until he was bought out due to several instances of off-ice problems related to locker room issues and his vocal political affiliations.
