Information reaching Kossyderrickent has it that TMNT Mutant Mayhem sequel is being planned as a ‘villain-forward film’ with Shredder being a major focus.

“Shredder is just a great character. He’s an iconic, classic, loved character. He’s like the Joker. You know who he is, even if you’re not a fan of the source material … We’re currently trying to make decisions about that … those decisions for us as filmmakers are always going to come from the place of what tells the best story, specifically about our main characters, the Turtles”.

Recently, Collider spoke with writer-director Jeff Rowe about the possible storyline for the already greenlit Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem sequel. Rowe revealed that the intention is to develop the story around the iconic antagonist Shredder and build “a villain-forward film.” However, the writing team is also focusing on “what tells the best story” about the Turtles, which will continue to be their priority

Speaking with Collider, Rowe says the sequel aims to be “villain-forward” and will likely showcase a Shredder different to the versions we’ve seen before.

They’re working now on a creation that both meets certain expectations of fandom, whilst also not offering the ‘same old thing’ either. Ultimately the aim is to do something that feels as fresh as the first film’s take on the turtles themselves:

“That is exactly what I am trying to figure out and what my next meeting will be about. That is what we are in the thick of now. Shredder is just a great character. He’s an iconic, classic, loved character. He’s like the Joker. You know who he is, even if you’re not a fan of the source material.

I think we definitely wanna do a villain-forward film. We’re currently trying to make decisions about that, but those decisions for us as filmmakers are always going to come from the place of what tells the best story, specifically about our main characters, the Turtles.”

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem sequel will be more villain-forward, promises the director. The movie, which is the latest big-screen reimagining of the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book characters, was both a critical and commercial success. In addition to getting a Certified Fresh 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Mutant Mayhem grossed $180.5 million worldwide, becoming the 23rd highest-grossing movie of the year at the time of writing.
