The Battle of Moscow could start this evening. Russian President Vladimir Putin says the country is facing treason, following “an armed mutiny” by Wagner mercenary force’s leader Yevgeny Prigozhin.
In his address to the nation, he vows to punish anyone who took up arms against the Russian military. He says measures would be taken to stabilise the situation in Rostov-on-Don, where Prigozhin claims to have taken control of all military facilities.
Putin also praised as “heroes” the Wagner members who have been fighting and dying alongside Russia’s armed forces in Ukraine.
The Kremlin has declared a counterterrorism state of emergency in Moscow and the surrounding region.
Russian security services have also opened a criminal investigation into Prigozhin. Earlier, Prigozhin claimed that his forces had entered Russia to remove the country’s military leadership.
“This is not a military coup, but a march of justice,” he said. Prigozhin accused the leadership of ordering a rocket attack on Wagner’s field camps in Ukraine, where “huge numbers” of his fighters had been killed.
Russia’s defence ministry has denied carrying out the rocket attack. The defence ministry also said that mercenary fighters have been “deceived and dragged into a criminal adventure” by Prigozhin.
The ministry urged Wagner fighters to contact its representatives and those of law enforcement services, and promised to guarantee their security.
