The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has found that over R5 billion in NSFAS funds may have been allocated to ineligible students.
Preliminary investigations show that over 40 000 students in 76 institutions of higher education received funding despite having a household income above R350 000, which disqualifies them from receiving NSFAS funds.
These students did not provide their parents’ details during the application process, which led to an improper means test being conducted.
