Terry Sanderson, the man who sued Gwyneth Paltrow over ski accident, says the lawsuit was ‘not worth it’ after losing:
“I’m gonna be on the internet forever.”
“I felt that acquiescing to a false claim compromised my integrity,” Paltrow said in a statement after the verdict was read. “I am pleased with the outcome and I appreciate all of the hard work of Judge Holmberg and the jury, and thank them for their thoughtfulness in handling this case.”
When asked whether he believed Paltrow, who maintained throughout the trial that she was down slope from Sanderson when he skied into her, was lying Sanderson said, “I believe she thinks she has the truth.”
Paltrow did not speak with reporters after the trial, but did release a statement via her attorneys.
“I felt that acquiescing to a false claim compromised my integrity,” Paltrow said in her statement. “I am pleased with the outcome and I appreciate all of the hard work of Judge Holmberg and the jury, and thank them for their thoughtfulness in handling this case.”
A jury in Park City, Utah, said in its verdict Thursday that the 76-year-old retired optometrist was “100 percent” at fault in the ski collision, which happened seven years ago at Deer Valley Resort. Paltrow was awarded $1 and the reimbursement of her legal fees in her countersuit.
Speaking to reporters outside the courtroom afterward, Sanderson said he was “very disappointed” in the outcome. When asked if the lawsuit — and the live-televised trial that saw testimony from his daughters and ex-girlfriend plus details about his medical history exposed — was worth it, he responded “Absolutely not.”
“Knowing that now, no,” he said of the spectacle and private details being made public, according to video from Extra. “I joked about dating sites, right? It’s like, I’m gonna be on the internet forever.” (While testifying earlier in the trial, Sanderson made the comment, “Well I can never go on another dating site again. … It’s the pain of trying to sue a celebrity.”)
When Extra’s Billy Bush suggested Sanderson might be up for a reality show, he responded with a smile, “I don’t need that.”
Outside the courtroom, reporters asked Sanderson what Paltrow said. “Her exact words: ‘I wish you well.’ Very kind of her,” he said.
When asked if he responded, Sanderson told reporters he said, “Thank you, dear.”
Sanderson accused Paltrow, who was on the mountain skiing with her kids, of “slamming” into him on the slopes. He alleged the crash left him with broken ribs and brain injury symptoms.
He sought more than $300,000 in damages and Paltrow, who maintained Sanderson crashed into her, counter-sued for a symbolic $1 and her attorney’s fees. Both testified during the trial, sharing vastly different accounts of the incident, which garnered widespread interest.
