A #StrangerThings fan had her life turned upside down after being catfished by a scammer claiming to be Dacre Montgomery, who plays Billy in the series.
The single mother says she left her husband for the scammer after meeting on an online forum, and even sent them nearly $10K.
In an effort to find out the truth about her online relationship, McKala called in the Catfished team for help.
The team did some digging into the person McKala had fallen for, and realised that he’d been using generic pictures taken from the internet to pass off as his own in a bid to trick McKala.
They determined that he was a romance scammer, telling McKala: “Due to the fact that this guy sent you so many things that are from so many different places all over the internet, we’ve come to the conclusion that you’re speaking to what’s known as a romance scammer.
“He’s done research on you, and he’s basically morphing himself into this person that you want him to be, and also attaching Dacre Montgomery’s photos to them.”
A single mom claims her life was turned upside down after she was catfished by a scammer claiming to be Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery.
McKayla of Kentucky revealed that she left her husband for “Montgomery” after the two met on an online forum for creatives, adding that she even sent the scammer roughly $10,000. The two “hit it off, but of course I’m suspicious from the get go until he starts doing things that make me believe that he is who he is,” she told Catfished, a YouTube series.
McKala checked the actor’s Instagram page and realised that he wasn’t posting anything about his girlfriend, Liv Pollock, so she only became more convinced.
After a few months of chatting, ‘Montgomery’ told McKala that she needed to choose between him or her husband.
“He gave me an ultimatum, he said it’s either your husband, or it’s me,” McKala said. “I said ‘look, there’s no competition. You treat me better’.”
She then told her husband he wasn’t letting her be herself, and told him to leave.
She said “Montgomery,” who plays Billy Hargrove on the Netflix hit, told her that he and his model girlfriend Liv Pollock were on the verge of a split due to Pollock’s controlling behavior. McKayla, who was in an unhappy marriage with a “toxic” partner, said she empathized “because my ex-husband was that way.” As “Montgomery,” the scammer informed her that Pollock controlled his bank accounts, prompting her to fund his life for over a year.
