This comes days after former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko Saved him from a one year jail sentence by paying Ksh 100,000 fine after he pleaded guilty of shoplifting food stuff from Naivas supermarket Moi avenue.

Alvin Chivondo had pleaded guilty to two accounts of stealing and handling stolen goods. On April 10 2022, he stole 5Kgs of Dawaat long grain rice, 500 grams of honey, 500 grams of tea leaves, 5litres of cooking oil and 2kgs of kabras sugar which all amounted to Ksh 3,165.

Police are now holding him at Central Police Station pending arraignment.

This comes weeks after Milimani Chief Magistrate Wendy Kagendo handed him a one-year prison sentence or a fine of Sh100,000.

The sentence was handed after he pleaded guilty to the offence of stealing 5 kgs of rice, 5 litres of cooking oil, 2 kgs of sugar, and tea leaves, all valued at Ksh3,165.

The man’s plight went viral prompting Sonko to come to his rescue and paid a Sh100,000 fine.

Sonko said that he made the decision as his normal way of reaching out to troubled people.

“Many Kenyans are living in squalor due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many will say that it’s PR but I like assisting people, that’s has been my passion since I was in high school in Kwale boys,” Sonko said.

He added that: “I have also promised to give him a one-month food stock plus offer him a job as well.”

ODM leader Raila Odinga took to Twitter then to call for his release saying: “Let the courts get their priorities right, for once, you can’t jail a man for trying to feed his family.”

After overseeing the release of the shoplifter from Industrial Area Prison, Sonko went further to give him one month’s worth of shopping as well as a job offer at his Upper Hill offices.

“We’ve offered Alvin Chivondo a job at our Upper Hill offices and our team in the office has shown him what his job entails. Am happy the young man is now free. It’s my hope he will be a responsible man,” Sonko said then.

Well, Chivondo seems to be right back it, it seems.

Chivondo was on Thursday reportedly nabbed at Naivas Supermarket on Ronald Ngala street attempting to steal maize flour.

He is presently being detained at Central Police Station awaiting arraignment.
