One suspect was in custody, and police were searching for a second suspect, Bettineschi said earlier Monday evening.
Both the mayor and Hollywood Police Chief Chris O’Brien vowed that the police would leave “no stone unturned” in finding and arresting those responsible for the shooting.
Officers are still searching for the suspect, described as a Black man with dreadlocks, Hollywood Police Department spokesperson Deanna Bettineschi told reporters. He was last seen wearing a black short-sleeve shirt and camo shorts.
O’Brien said Hollywood police were being assisted by state and federal agencies. O’Brien called the shooting a “senseless act of gun violence.” He said, “It’s unfortunate when we have law-abiding citizens come to our beach to enjoy the day and that gets disrupted by a group of criminals who engage in this type of violent activity.”
A mass shooting has taken place Hollywood Beach, Florida. CBS reports that at least seven people have been shot, including children.
In April, DeSantis’ permitless carry went into effect. He also just signed a bill blocking credit card companies from seeing who’s buying a gun.
Let’s be clear: This shooter did not act alone. He was aided by spineless Republicans who refuse to protect us. In the aftermath of yet another horrific mass shooting, here’s a reminder that Republicans weren’t always like this.
Here’s former Supreme Court Justice Warren Burger, who was appointed by President Nixon, on the perversion of the NRA:
“The Gun Lobby’s interpretation of the Second Amendment is one of the greatest pieces of fraud, I repeat the word fraud, on the American People by special interest groups that I have ever seen in my lifetime. The real purpose of the Second Amendment was to ensure that state armies – the militia – would be maintained for the defense of the state. The very language of the Second Amendment refutes any argument that it was intended to guarantee every citizen an unfettered right to any kind of weapon he or she desires.”
Four children including a 1-year-old, were among 9 people shot and wounded when gunfire erupted near Florida’s Hollywood Beach during Memorial Day. The shooting happened on the Hollywood Oceanfront Broadwalk near a convenience store, a Ben & Jerry’s ice cream store and a Subway sandwich shop.
Alvie Carlton Scott III said he was on the beach when he suddenly heard numerous gunshots. He said he hid behind a tree and then fled the area after a police officer told people to run.
Jamie Ward, who was also on the broadwalk, said several young men were fighting in front of the stores when one pulled a gun and started shooting.
Videos posted on Twitter on Monday evening showed emergency medical crews responding and providing aid to multiple injured people.
Late Monday night, police kept a big presence along the Broadwalk, and investigators were still talking with witnesses in the area.
Police asked people to avoid the Broadwalk and other areas near the beach as they investigated. The areas to avoid, police said on Twitter: Hollywood beach from Johnson to Garfield streets and the Broadwalk.
Police began receiving 911 calls about 6:52 p.m. Dozens of officers already were on duty in the area, amid the big crowd from the holiday.
Officers “immediately responded,” Bettineschi said. “They found the nine victims with gunshot wounds. They immediately rendered aid.”
Jamie Ward, 46, the former mayor of Mayfield, N.Y., moved to South Florida last year. He said he was riding and electric bike down the Broadwalk when the shooting began. He said there were two groups who argued and then the gunfire happened.
The Broadwalk, a popular beachside destination, was crowded with families and people enjoying the holiday Monday when the gunshots began. People began to run. Officers, paramedics and Good Samaritans went to help those who were shot.
“People come to enjoy a holiday weekend on the beach with their families,” Mayor Josh Levy said late Monday night. “And to have people in complete reckless disregard of the safety of the public — and to have an altercation with guns, in a public setting with thousands of people around them — is beyond reckless.”
