Information reaching Kossyderrickent has it that Derrick John Thompson, identified as the driver who killed five Somali Muslim women in car crash at T-bone crash at Lake St., Minneapolis.
Investigators say Derrick John Thompson, 22, of Minnesota is believed to be the driver who struck a woman who was walking along Butterfly Ln. on the afternoon of September 4.
CHP says Ventura police had chased Thompson’s car into the Montecito area after trying to stop the vehicle for reckless driving.
After the woman was hit, investigators say the vehicle crashed into a wall and Thompson ran away. Two passengers in the car were arrested at the scene.
Omar said Ali and her mother acted as diligent caretakers of the mosque. Abdikadir also volunteered there, teaching young children how to read and write Arabic as part of their Islamic studies.
On Friday, the women were doing some last-minute shopping at the mall and having henna applied for a close friend’s wedding Saturday night before heading home.
“They weren’t doing anything wrong,” Omar said. “They were just getting ready for their friend’s wedding.” Five young women who had just left Karmel Mall after having henna applied for a friend’s wedding were killed Friday night when a speeding driver ran a red light and struck their car on Lake Street.
Community leaders identified the dead as Sabiriin Ali, 17, of Bloomington; Sahra Gesaade, 20, of Brooklyn Center; Salma Abdikadir, 20, of Saint Louis Park; Sagal Hersi, 19, of Minneapolis; and Siham Adam, 19, of Minneapolis. Three of the women were cousins; one was an extended relative; and the fifth was a friend.
“Sources confirm the suspect in the crash last night that killed five is Derek Thompson. The son of former state rep John Thompson.”
“You have mothers who, 15 minutes before this accident took place, were talking to their daughters. And now this morning they had to wake up, and be here without their daughters,” Khalid said. “And so there’s a lot of grievance that a lot of people are grieving. A lot of people are very emotional and looking for hope, and everybody’s coming back to their faith traditions.”
Minneapolis police said the women were killed when the vehicle they were in was struck by another car that ran a red light a little after 10 p.m. Friday. The crash occurred at Lake Street and 2nd Avenue.
Ali had just graduated from Edina High School and was planning to attend the University of Minnesota, where she aspired to study medicine. Gesaade was a third-year student at the U’s Rochester campus, and Abdikadir was a sophomore at Normandale Community College. Adam attended the U, and Hersi was a student at Minneapolis Community and Technical College.
