Former President Edgar Chagwa Lungu is deeply saddened by the demise of veteran politician and freedom fighter Sikota Wina who died on the 15th of June, 2022. 




The former Head of State lauded Mr Wina for “his sacrifice and enormous contributions to our country’s independence struggle and democratic dispensation. He dedicated his life to public service and served this country with diligence and the highest mark of patriotism and honesty.” Mr. Lungu remarked.


President Lungu has further called upon Zambians to mourn our fallen hero in a dignified manner and extol and reflect upon the values of selflessness, patriotism and nationalism that Mr. Wina espoused throughout his long and illustrious political career.


Sikota Wina was a veteran politician and freedom fighter who served in various senior government portfolios. He was first elected to the Legislative Council for Copperbelt West in the general elections that was held in 1962. He later became Parliamentary Secretary to Kenneth Kaunda when Kaunda was appointed Minister of Local Government. He was elected Member of Parliament for Luanshya–Kalulushi constituency in 1964 and was appointed the first Minister of Health after Zambia got independence in 1964. He later became Minister for Local Government that same year. In 1968, he was elected Member of Parliament for Roan Constituency and was subsequently appointed Minister of Information, Broadcasting and Tourism.
