Information reaching Kossyderrickent has it that Police have arrested Tyson Anunda Kiriago, a Cyber Operator from Ngong, after he printed Must Go 27 on tshirt.

DCI Arrest Cyber Cafe Owner for Wearing a “Must Go 27” t-shirt:

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI)  detained Tyson Anunda, a cyber cafe owner, for wearing a t-shirt emblazoned with the words “Must Go 27.” This slogan is widely interpreted as a call for President William Ruto to step down by the 2027 elections, reflecting the growing discontent with the current economic situation in Kenya. Amidst rising costs of living, high unemployment, and the recent introduction of new taxes making daily life more challenging for many Kenyans, the government appears to be adopting a stringent approach to silence potential dissenters.

The arrest comes as part of what many perceive as a broader governmental strategy to clamp down on any form of protest or criticism against the administration. Wearing such a jersey is seen by some as an exercise of free speech, protected under Article 33 of the Kenyan Constitution, which guarantees the freedom of expression. However, authorities argue that such expressions could lead to public disorder, citing Section 96 of the Penal Code which deals with incitement to violence, despite no explicit violence being associated with Anunda’s attire. This incident has raised alarms among civil rights advocates who see it as a direct infringement on constitutional rights, specifically Articles 33, 37, and 38, which also cover the right to assembly and political rights. The cyber cafe owner was released on a Sh10,000 cash bail, but the message sent by his arrest is clear: the government is willing to use legal levers to stifle opposition voices. Critics argue that this could set a worrying precedent for freedom of expression in Kenya, potentially chilling political discourse and participation ahead of the 2027 elections.
