On Thursday evening, around 3,000 people in the Bavarian city mourned the victims. RTL was there. We show the moving images in the video above.
“My nerves can’t quite handle it myself”
There must be hundreds of candles and flowers laid at the crime scene. It is already dark when the “silent memorial” for the victims takes place in the park in Aschaffenburg in the evening. It is palpable: the city is in shock.
“It’s all so deep,” says a man in front of our camera. “I just can’t say anything.” Another says: “It hurts so much because children are affected here.” RTL meets a young woman who has a little brother and often goes for walks with him in the park. In the park that became the crime scene. “It’s terrible what happened here yesterday. My nerves can’t quite handle it myself,” she says. Shortly afterwards, she falters, has to take a deep breath and swallow once.
In the midst of the rush hour at the end of the working day, it is very quiet on a gentle hill in the center of Aschaffenburg on Thursday evening. The traffic around the park where the murderer stabbed is roaring, you can hear cars honking, buses humming past, people rushing out of the “City-Galerie” shopping center with their shopping bags heavy on their backs. More than 1,000 people are standing on a hill. They don’t say a word, they don’t sing a song. In front of them lies the “Blue Piano”, the work of a local artist, now covered with a black cloth, arranged like an altar for mourning, with wreaths of flowers and candles. You can hear the clicking of the cameras, as well as sobs and sighs. The crowd is silent for a quarter of an hour.
