Illegal Labor Practices Unearthed at Construction Site in George, Majority of Workers are Illegal foreigners, They were allegedly Paid slave wages of R10 per hour or R80 a day, by the white-owned Company, NeoTrend Group.

Non-contracted bricklayers and sand mixers were being hired on the spot at a construction site in George, Cape Town, where they are paid in cash on a weekly basis at rates far below the legal minimum wage.

Shockingly, these workers receive just over R80 per day or just over R10 per hour, significantly lower than the R3,500 minimum wage threshold.

Rescue operations are ongoing in George, Western Cape province in South Africa, where eight people have died after the collapse of a five-story building.

More than 200 emergency services staff from across the province are involved in rescue operations, a statement by the Western Cape government says. The building, which was still under construction, caved in at about 2:09 p.m. SAST on Monday, May 6, says another statement — which adds that, “75 construction workers were present on the site at the time of the collapse.”

As of noon local time, the George Herald reported that of the people rescued, 16 are in critical condition, with six obtaining life-threatening injuries and seven with minor injuries.

In a troubling revelation by @TheLegalSA, it has been discovered that out of the 75 workers at the site, 51 were foreign nationals, with 43 of them being in the country illegally and lacking the necessary work or sojourn documents.

Mayor Leon van Wyk of the George Municipality has identified the developer responsible for the collapsed building as NeoTrend Group.
