A family in eMlazi is demanding answers after the tragic death of their son, Phiwokuhle Qophelo Nzuza, who was allegedly left unattended at school following a car accident.

The incident took place on Monday, February 24, 2025, at Orissa Primary School, where the young boy was struck by a vehicle outside the premises while waiting for transport home.

According to the family, the driver, reportedly a relative of another student, did not take the injured child to the hospital but instead carried him back into the school. At around 1:40 PM, Phiwokuhle’s mother received a call from the school informing her of the accident and urging her to rush to the hospital. However, just 15 minutes later, another call came instructing her to go to the school instead.

Upon arrival, the family found several police officers at the school, where the principal, Mrs. D.B. Cele, broke the devastating news that Phiwokuhle had passed away. When the family was finally allowed to see his body, they found him lying inside an office, covered with a black cloth. They noted visible scrapes on his arms and head but no apparent severe injuries. However, they were disturbed to see white foam coming from his nose and mouth.

The grieving family is now questioning why the school failed to take Phiwokuhle to the hospital immediately, as it is located nearby. They believe he may have survived if medical help had been sought sooner. Adding to their concerns, when they saw his body, they noticed flies around him, raising suspicions that he may have been dead for some time before they were informed.

Further complicating the situation, when the family went to the police station the following day to seek answers about the driver responsible for the accident, they were told there was no record of the driver’s details in the police report. This was despite the fact that police officers had reportedly spoken to the driver at the school. The family is now demanding transparency and accountability, questioning how such a critical detail could be missing from official records.

The family has called for a thorough investigation into both the school’s handling of the situation and the circumstances surrounding Phiwokuhle’s death.

They are also considering legal action to hold those responsible accountable. Authorities have not yet provided an official statement, but investigations into the matter are expected to continue.
