The disappearance of 13-year-old Kei’Mani Latigue has ended in tragedy. The teen, reported missing out of Toledo, Ohio, was found dead on March 24 inside an abandoned home on Miami Street. Her father, 33-year-old Darnell Jones, has been charged with murder.
Jones was the last known person to be seen with Kei’Mani before her disappearance and allegedly gave conflicting statements to authorities about her whereabouts. As the search intensified, concerns grew within the family—especially from Kei’Mani’s grandmother, Dorothy Latigue, who was the child’s primary guardian.
Dorothy said she returned home on March 17 to find the house in disarray. The stove had been left on, filling the home with gas, and Kei’Mani’s keys, glasses, and other personal belongings were still inside. The strange circumstances immediately triggered alarm.
On March 24, as police closed in on the investigation, Dorothy was briefly seen on video being escorted out of her home in handcuffs by Toledo police, sparking community outrage. However, the department later clarified that she was not under arrest and had only been moved for her safety during the investigation.
A day after Kei’Mani’s body was discovered, Columbus police encountered Darnell Jones. According to officials, he allegedly pulled a weapon during the confrontation, and officers opened fire. Jones was shot, hospitalized, and is in stable condition. He now faces charges of abduction and murder in Lucas County.
The case has shaken the Toledo community and left many demanding answers. Kei’Mani was just days away from her 14th birthday.
The suspect is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
This is a developing story.
