Olivia Rodrigo announces new single “Vampire” out June 30.
The song marks Rodrigo’s first original music since her 2021 breakout album, “Sour.”
Rodrigo had previously teased new music on social media, uploading a mirror selfie with a calendar marked June 30 with a heart in the background. On May 21, the two-year anniversary of her debut album “Sour,” Rodrigo sent a note to fans via her newsletter: “I’m taking today to reflect on all the amazing things that have happened since ‘Sour’ and looking fORward 2 all the things to come.” (Yes, the “OR 2,” shorthand for her second album, is intentionally capitalized and bolded.)
Following the two year anniversary of her debut album “SOUR,” Rodrigo has posted a countdown to June 30 on her website.
Prior to the website countdown clock, Rodrigo posted a photo on Instagram with a calendar in the background that has June 30th circled on it.
Olivia Rodrigo is an American actress and singer. She is known for her roles as Paige Olvera on the Disney Channel series Bizaardvark and Nini Salazar-Roberts on the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Series.
Rodrigo wrote songs for the High School Musical: The Series soundtrack including “All I Want” and co-wrote “Just for a Moment.” In 2020, Rodrigo signed with Interscope and Geffen Records. She released her debut single “Drivers License” in January 2021.
“Driver’s License,” was, for a time, the most-listened-to streaming song on the planet. It revolves around a teenager getting her license on the same day she loses the love of her life. She says the song is rooted in real life, recalling her own breakup.
At the start of June, Rodrigo’s website homepage converted to a timer counting down to June 30.
In an earlier Instagram post, Rodrigo assured fans, “the new stuff is so so so so so close to being done I pinky promise.”
Rodrigo reunited with “Sour” producer Dan Nigro for her sophomore effort, telling Billboard last year, “We have such a good groove together. We are always sharing ideas back-and-forth and have been carving out time to work together in the studio. I trust him so much and really enjoy the music we’ve been making.”
Rodrigo also confirmed that, as was the case with “Sour,” she continues to write music in her bedroom.
More recently, Rodrigo posted a clip to Instagram Stories of her and Nigro working on an unreleased piano-based track. Since releasing Sour, Rodrigo has won the Grammys for Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Album, and, for “Drivers License,” Best Pop Solo Performance. On tour that year, she performed “Deja Vu” and “Uptown Girl” with Billy Joel, inducted Alanis Morissette into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, sang “Torn” with Natalie Imbruglia, and played “You’re So Vain” to welcome Carly Simon into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
