Oculus founder Palmer Luckey recently wrote in a new blog post that he’s previously created a VR headset that would kill users if they die in a game.

He admitted that he built the headset with 3 explosives attached, so that when users die in the virtual world, they too would die in real life.

It’s as if the Oculus creator took inspiration from the 2006 film ‘Stay Alive’ — where a group of friends decided to play an online game that turned into a real-life horror. Or even like the fictional version of NerveGear. However, unlike NerveGear, Luckey says he couldn’t figure out how to kill the user with “powerful microwaves” — so he modified a previous VR headset to explode when the user lose their life in a video game, thus killing them in real life. Now, Luckey is known as the original creator of the Oculus headset, which he sold to Facebook in 2014 for $2 billion. The original creation was for Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse ambitions.

In his blog post, Luckey said, “The idea of tying your real life to your virtual avatar has always fascinated me – you instantly raise the stakes to the maximum level and force people to fundamentally rethink how they interact with the virtual world and the players inside it… only the threat of serious consequences can make a game feel real to you and every other person in the game.”
