Nigerians are currently discussing the pains young lawyers always pass through in Nigeria; especially in the hands of their senior lawyers or employers.
Nigerians have taken to their various Twitter pages to discuss how young lawyers are either underpaid or pass through one suffering or the other. Young lawyers themselves revealed what they have passed through in the hands of their senior lawyers.
Read the discussions below:
Eze Nwanyi Nnunu tweeted: “Nigerian lawyers, if you can, do your research and leave the profession entirely. It’s never too late. You have transferable skills.
Only practiced for 10 months and swore never to do it again. I’ve always been good at maths and computer so I switched to Data Science. Find your strengths, combine it with few skills you developed as a lawyer and make a switch.”
Baamofin Lu’Jesha tweeted: “Back in 2015, I interviewed at one law firm and I asked for basic salary of 70K. I was just a year at the bar, they looked at me funny and said they’d get back to me.
Two weeks later, J discovered the most senior lawyer there gets 40 K salary, over 12 years at the bar.
It wss that time I said “I’m not learning anything, I will learn from my own mistakes” toripe eleribu ni awon Law firms yen. Law firm wey get website oo.”
Ms. Millions tweeted: “A lawyer I know in Enugu, was gisting me how when she returns from court with her oga, she massages his feet.
He told her to be doing it because he’s elderly and his leg pains him regularly.
Salary: 10k.”
I’m lucky.I’m yet to experience any of this crap. My boss is humane. An NYSC lawyer, I earn 6 digits. My mum died, my boss gave me 100k with an condolence letter.I was out of work for 2 weeks, I still got my full salary with bonus. God bless Kayode Sofola(SAN) & @KSLEGAL_NG

You know what’s really mind boggling about all the complaints? A lot of you will become senior lawyers and still repeat the cycle. You will do what you’re complaining about today to others. I don’t get it.

The problem of young lawyers getting used to oppression starts from universities & law school where law students are told they can be kicked out of law school & law education for disagreeing with the authorities or dissenting. Oppression is brain-washed into young lawyers early.

As a young lawyer, I
1. Bought Amala (to exact spec, otherwise, you will go back) for boss on a norm.
2. Picked up kids from school
3. Attended PTA meetings
4. Gone to Gbagi to look for birthday material
5. Picked up husband’s dry cleaningAll on the robust ‘allowance’ of N3,900

Horror stories young lawyers are sharing on CH about their experiences explains why most lawyers can’t effectively fight against injustice. If young lawyers are presently facing such wicked injustice in law firms & from fellow lawyers, how can they fight for justice in country?

Can’t forget when my friend was negotiating a fee of 3.5m on a transaction of about 300m. There and then, they called another lawyer who collected 100k.

The main reason why Senior lawyers pay lawyers peanuts is because they believe that if you resign, there are thousands of others willing to take that 50k job.
