Fans caught a short glimpse of Matthew Lillard‘s character, William Afton the initial teaser. While the character doesn’t say or do much in the teaser, there seems to be excitement for the character’s appearance. This makes sense considering that in the games, William Afton was just some purple pixel sprite or a guy trapped in a spring-locked bunny suit.

William Afton is the primary antagonist of the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise. While Afton’s crimes are mentioned in the first game, he first appears officially in FNAF 2. Afton originally featured in several 8-bit minigames, lending him his pixilated appearance and purple hue, which led to the nickname “The Purple Guy.” Played by Matthew Lillard in the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie William Afton and his business partner built Fredbear’s Family Diner in the 1970s. The pair also made two springlock suits, Fredbear and Spring Bonnie, to serve as the diner’s mascots.

Lillard is mostly known for his role as Shaggy in the Scooby-Doo franchise and has played the character since 2002. Asides from the widly popular animated franchise, the actor is in a handful of shows in minor roles. His new role, William Afton, is the main antagonist in the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise and is said to be behind the culprit behind all of the nefarious goings on around the haunted pizzeria. All in all, it’s great to finally see a human take on the iconic character.

Five Nights at Freddy’s will not only star Lillard. Joining him will be The Hunger Games‘ Josh Hutcherson, who will also have a main role in the film as Mike Schmidt, and You‘s Elizabeth Lail will play Vanessa. Three of the animatronics in the live-action take have also been named.
