African Chart Zone reports: “Chad is facing a food crisis. The Government has declared a food emergency. Over 33% of the country’s population needs food aid.
“The UN warns that 5.5 million people in Chad would need humanitarian assistance this year.”
U.N Humanitarian reports:
“On 1 June 2022, the Government of Chad issued a decree declaring a food and nutrition emergency, following a recent deterioration of the country’s food and nutrition situation.
“At least 2.1 million people will be severely food insecure during the lean season from June to September 2022. Already today more than 3 million people are food insecure and can fall into the severe food insecurity category if serious measures are not taken. Around 1.8 million children under the age of five will suffer from acute malnutrition, especially in the capital Ndjamena where cases of severe acute malnutrition increased by 121 per cent in three months, according to the Government and the UN Children’s Fund.
“The crisis is driven by a combination of insecurity, deep poverty, erratic rainfall, record-high food prices and a deteriorating economic situation. The Government has developed an emergency response plan, requiring $150 million for the lean season. Last month, in anticipation of the lean season, and considering the low level of humanitarian funding (currently only 15 per cent of requirements), $8 million was allocated from the UNs Central Emergency Response Fund. This will help humanitarian actors provide food and nutritional assistance in the most affected provinces and nutrition services to children and women in Ndjamena.
Clashes in Tibesti
Clashes between the groups illegally controlling gold mines in Kouri Bougoudi, Tibesti province in the far north of Chad, have been reported since last week.At least 100 people have reportedly died and large groups of people are heading south to escape the violence. A Government mission was dispatched and the army is trying to restore order.
“With no humanitarian presence in Tibesti and limited access, this situation is leading to more humanitarian and protection needs. Around 40,000 gold miners are in Kouri Bougoudi, and at least two thousand people have fled to nearby cities, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). IOM estimates that 10,000 affected gold miners need water, food and non-food items, protection and safe relocation, and that this will cost $5 million.
“Coordination between the humanitarian community and the Government is ongoing to respond to the needs.”
