Jenna Ortega reportedly asked to end her contract with the “Scream” franchise following Melissa Barrera getting fired.
The American horror genre is one that has stood against the tide of time. At a time when superhero movies have saturated the big screens, it is always the lure of thrill and biting off your nails that keeps fans excited down for the ride. Among the most recent prominent pioneers of this genre, the Scream franchise is certainly one that tops the list. Taking the trope of loving horror movies to death quite literally, the franchise holds a commendable footing. However, the next installment is under trouble as leads, including Mellisa Barreras and Jenna Ortega, may not return for their roles.
The decision has been widely criticized by the Scream franchise’s fans and it’s believed that the cast and crew of the upcoming slasher sequel are just as crushed. In the wake of the news, director Christopher Landon tweeted, in a now-deleted post, “This is my statement: Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make.”
Because of this, and the well-known closeness between the cast of the contemporary Scream movies, there is much confusion over whether Jenna Ortega, Barrera’s on-screen sister, will return for Scream 7 or not. Here’s what we know so far.
The actress dropped controversial statements on the Israel-Hamas war, which did not sit well with the producing franchise. Spyglass Media Group swiftly fired Barrera relaying a “zero tolerance” policy. Meanwhile, Scream had recently faced troubling issues when its recent outings landed in scathing reviews. The last flick, Scream VI, featured the Carpenter sisters and the Meeks-Martin twins surviving the Ghostface attacks while it debuted with a comfortable 76% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Inspired by the real-life serial killer, Danny Rolling aka Gainesville Ripper, the American horror thriller, has long enamored audiences with its thrill quotient. To add to its ‘charm’, Wednesday actress Jenna Ortega signed up for the franchise with 2022’s Scream 5. However, it looks like the end of the road is near for two core members of its ‘Core Four’ group. The Tara Carpenter actress may not return for Scream 7 due to supposed scheduling conflicts. The news comes mere hours after Sam Carpenter actress, Melissa Barrera had herself booted.
