Sebastian Haller has scored his first competitive goal for Borussia Dortmund since recovering from testicular cancer, a goal he also scored on World Cancer Day, February 4, 2023.
The former West Ham striker, who returned to action three weeks ago, scored Dortmund’s third goal with a 51st-minute header to help BVB trash Freiburg in their 5-1 Bundesliga clash.
The 28-year-old Ivorian striker had been diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2022 and had been ruled out of competitive football to attend to his health.
Haller was diagnosed days after signing for Dortmund as Erling Haaland’s replacement, and needed two operations. He has had four rounds of chemotherapy, and surgery in November.
The 28-year-old recounted the moment when he found out the dreaded news, but also spoke about the overwhelming support received in his battle with the disease.
“I was at the training camp in Switzerland and I said to the to the doctor and physios that I had something in my body that was a bit uncomfortable,” he explained.
“So we had to take an MRI the next day, and after that they saw that it was a tumour, but they didn’t know exactly the nature of it.
“I had to get it checked by the urologist. He knew it was this cancer and everything happened very quickly, let’s say in 24 hours.
“The toughest thing was to see the faces of my family and deal with the pain and the sadness from my closest ones.
