Information reaching Kossyderrickent has it that Robert Fico airlifted by helicopter to hospital in Bańskej Bystrice after being shot by 71-year-old suspect in Krickerhau, Slovakia.
Heavy security is likely in Handlova, in central Slovakia, on May 15 following the shooting of Prime Minister Robert Fico. Fico was reportedly shot several times by an unknown assailant while greeting members of the public outside Handlova’s Palace of Culture following a government meeting. Preliminary reports state Fico was transported to an unspecified medical facility; his condition is unknown. At least one suspect has been arrested at the scene; his motive remains unclear. Police have evacuated the Palace of Culture, where multiple government officials were conducting meetings, and erected a security cordon.
Heavy security will likely persist over the coming hours as police investigate the scene and secure the area. Localized disruptions, including police checks and business disruptions, are likely.
“We absolutely and strongly condemn violence and today’s shooting of Premier Robert Fico,” said Progressive Slovakia leader Michal Simecka. “At the same time we call on all politicians to refrain from any expressions and steps which could contribute to further increasing the tension.”
A former bodybuilder, Fico, 59, returned to power in Slovakia after elections last year, at the head of a populist-nationalist coalition.
