The Western Cape provincial police management
commended members attached to the provincial detectives responsible for narcotics for their diligent investigation, which resulted in a 17 years’ imprisonment imposed on a couple at the Regional Court in Oudtshoorn.

On 10 November 2020, members attached to Oudtshoorn Crime Prevention Unit and Crime Intelligence conducted an operation when the members armed with a search warrant raided a premises in Adderley Street, Oudtshoorn. The vigilant members proceeded with a thorough search of the premises, which led to the discovery of 1347 mandrax tablets and 1152.83 grams of tik. They confiscated the drugs, which was estimated at R470 000-00 and arrested a 38-year-old man, who was later identified as Jude Chibuzor, a Nigerian national, on a charge of dealing in drugs.
An amount of R63 960-00, believed to be proceeds of the illicit drug trade, was also seized during the operation.

Investigation into the seizure linked the customary wife of the accused by means of cellphone records and witness reports. The woman, Suzan Chizoba Maduka (37), also a Nigerian national, was subsequently arrested at a later stage and added as an accused to the matter.
The pair was found guilty on a charge of dealing in drugs following a lengthy trial. They were each sentenced to 17 years of direct imprisonment on Monday, 15 July 2024.

All items, including the amount of cash, confiscated during the operation were forfeited to the state.
Both accused were found unfit to possess a firearm in terms of the Firearm Control Act 60/2000.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lt Gen (Adv.) Thembisile Patekile applauded all involved in the chain, who assisted police to remove the drugs from the streets and the accused from society.
