Information reaching Kossyderrickent has it that 33-year-old boy, Bandile Tshabalala, died in Shoprite cold room after being locked there and assaulted by store manager over allegations he stole bar of chocolate in Ratanda.
Police have opened an inquest docket after a 33-year-old Bandile Tshabalala was found dead in a cold-room inside Shoprite at the Ratanda Mall.
According to Ratanda police, it is alleged that two male adults were kept inside the Shoprite Supermarket in Ratanda Mall after being searched and found with a bottle of antiseptic inside the trousers of the alleged suspects.
“They were taken to the back a locked in a cage where they kept the suspect while waiting for the police to take over. While detained at Shoprite premises around 4PM, Bandile Tshabalala (33) asked to use the toilet and he was escorted,” explained police spokesperson Colonel Moss Maluleke.
Soon later, Tshabalala told the security guards that he is having stomach pains and paramedics were called to assist him. Unfortunately, when paramedics arrived he was declared dead and his family was notified.
The community of Ratanda has responded in anger after hearing of the incident. The store manager’s vehicle was damaged, including the main entrance of the store.
Initial reports from news media outlets falsely reported that a teenage boy aged 13 was locked inside a cold-room. Police have debunked these claims saying they will update their witness statements.
“Ratanda saps want to emphasize that community must stop posting negative and incomplete nor rumours which might ruin the progress of the case opened or to take law into their own hands and let justice take its course,” Maluleke said.
