Hospital in France is condemned after the removal of a patient’s penis: ‘I have hatred’, says victim.
Talk about that to a man, for him it’s unthinkable!” This thirty-year-old who lives between Nantes and Saint-Nazaire, and wants to remain anonymous, experienced the unthinkable. Eight years ago, in 2014, this father of three children learns that he is suffering from skin cancer in the penis. Treated at the University Hospital of Nantes, he had to have his penis amputated after a medical error.
The administrative court of Nantes ruled this Wednesday, December 21 on the compensation for its damage: nearly 62,000 euros. His lawyer, Me Georges Parastatis, had claimed nearly a million euros. “I’m really devastated and it’s really shameful”, reacts the amputee patient who says he is “disgusted.”
Me Parastatis announces that his client will appeal “to assert the singularity of this file, which French administrative jurisprudence has difficulty in conceiving”. “The psychological damage was not taken into account, he underlines. The judges were not able to get out of a nomenclature drafted by enarques.
He was only 30 years old when the diagnosis was announced to him: cancer in the penis. “I said to myself ‘why me’?” His urologist at the Nantes University Hospital removes the tumour, while trying to limit the removal of the penis as much as possible. But the cancer is spreading. The pain becomes excruciating. The thirty-year-old tries to relieve himself with cocktails of morphine, Tramadol and codeine. “I was completely crazy, there was even a moment when I wanted to cut it myself. It was my wife who stopped me. I had the cutter, Betadine, and I was preparing my thing in the garage!”, he says
The years pass and the cancer continues to progress, until another doctor, in Lyon, decides on the total amputation of the penis. “Inside I knew it. It was either death or that. And indeed he had removed everything. He had just left the testicles and had cut at the base”, explains the 30-year-old. Since then, medical expertise has demonstrated the error of the Nantes urologist who did not remove all the cancer cells from his patient. “I have hatred towards this doctor who did not listen to me. He played Russian roulette with me!, he lets go. There, I no longer feel anything. Afterwards, we manage. But you can’t replace a feeling of a penis with several sensors.
Hatred, this man also feels when he thinks of the time lost to treat his cancer which lodged in his lungs. After very heavy treatment, at 38 years old today, he is in remission.
