Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz will fend off his primary challengers, clearing his path to another term representing his deep-red Florida Panhandle district in Congress, NBC News projected.
Gaetz had come under fire in the primary from veteran and former FedEx executive Mark Lombardo, who sought to spotlight the controversial congressman’s many scandals — including being embroiled in a federal sex-
In the run-up to the primary, Lombardo seized on Gaetz’s lack of an endorsement from Trump, questioning in an ad whether Gaetz was an “informant” who led the FBI to raid Trump’s Palm Beach resort home Mar-a-Lago.
Little polling was available ahead of the primary, but Gaetz, an incumbent who far outraised and outspent Lombardo, was considered the likely favorite. Lombardo had self-funded the vast majority of his campaign as of early August, campaign finance filings show.
Rebekah Jones, a Democrat who will face off against Matt Gaetz in November’s midterms, has heavily criticized the GOP Florida congressman after a picture of her autistic 12-year-old online was posted onto his Facebook page to mock her campaign.
Jones, a former Florida Department of Health data scientist, posted a video on TikTok about the “disturbing” Facebook photo which was uploaded onto Gaetz’s Facebook on September 10.
The Facebook post in question was two photos side by side, one showing dozens of people at a campaign event for Gaetz, alongside one of a young child alone with his head on the desk at a booth.
“So why don’t you come on down here? Join me on the debate stage, and we’ll see who’s really the better candidate for Florida’s first district, and you can stop creeping on my children and having pictures taken off them and then reposting them online when they’re sitting alone in public, and events that aren’t even mine,” Jones added.
Jones is due to stand trial in January after allegations she improperly accessed a Florida health department computer system.
The Justice Department’s probe into whether Rep. Matt Gaetz had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl and paid her to travel with him has not made much noise recently since it was first reported in 2021, but the investigation appears to be ongoing, according to a new report.
Eight people familiar with the inquiry told The Daily Beast that the case continues to be investigated, while no formal charges have yet been brought against the Florida congressman.
If there are any updates on the case, however, the announcement would likely come after the midterms in November to avoid the appearance of meddling with the elections, two attorneys told the publication.
Gaetz has repeatedly and denied the allegations. On Twitter in March 2021, he claimed that the accusations were part of an “organized criminal extortion” scheme involving a former DOJ official seeking $25 million from Gaetz and his family.
A Florida businessman named Stephen M. Alford was sentenced to more than five years in prison on Tuesday for his attempt to defraud the congressman’s father, Don Gaetz, out of $25 million.
Alford claimed he could make investigations into Gaetz go away or secure a presidential pardon in exchange for the money, according to the Justice Department.
The DOJ’s probe into Gaetz stemmed from another investigation into one of the congressman’s associates, Joel Greenberg.
