It was a night to remember for Cheluchi Onyemelukwe-Onuobia, an author and professor in the School of Law and Security Studies at Babcock University, as she went home with a cash prize of $100,000 at the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) awards. (Read More Here).
Onyemelukwe-Onuobia beat 10 other authors to win the award for Literature and a cash prize of $100,000 for her novel – The Son of the House, at NLNG awards, the biggest science and literary award in Africa.
Uchechukwu Peter Umezurike, a PhD student at the University of Alberta, Canada, won the the award in Literary Criticism category for his critical essays ‘Self-Publishing in the era of military rule in Nigeria, 1985 – 1999,’ ‘Postcolonial Ogres in Ngugi Wa Thiongo’s Wizard of the Crow,’ and ‘Land of cemetery: funeral images in the poetry of Musa Idris Okpanachi.
Umezurike also went home with a cash prize of N1m for his critical essays.
However, the Science Prize, which also awards the winner with the same $100,000 prize, was left unclaimed this year.
Since making its debut in 2004, the NLNG awards have been a major growth driver in Nigeria’s creative and science innovation sectors for the past 17 years.
The award ceremony has continued to bridge the gap between development and underdevelopment in Nigeria.
