David de Gea contract with Manchester united has expired as he has become a free agent.

David de Gea officially became a free agent at midnight on Friday when his contract with Manchester United expired.

The 32-year-old had signed that contract back in 2019 when he became the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world with a weekly wage in the region of £400,000.

According to The Athletic, De Gea accepted the offer of a new contract on significantly less money earlier this year, but the document was then not signed by the club. And confirming that discussions were still being held with De Gea, who has helped the Red Devils to one Premier League title as well as Europa League, FA Cup, and League Cup wins, they said: “Meanwhile, David De Gea’s contract is due to run out but discussions remain open with the long-serving keeper.”

One player who is definitely heading out the door though is Marcel Sabitzer. After joining on loan from Bayern Munich in February, the attacking midfielder played 18 times for the club, scoring three times.

He could decide to re-sign for the Red Devils but there is also interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia.

However, De Gea likely has other things on his mind right now because he is getting married to Spanish singer Edurne Garcia this weekend.

De Gea moved to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and he has made 545 appearances in 12 seasons with United. However, Erik ten Hag has seemingly followed the advice of ex-United icon Paul Scholes, who previously implied that the 29-year-old did not have what it takes to command a regular starting place. Indeed, he labelled Sabitzer, who missed the run-in with a knee injury, as a “squad player” who the Dutch boss could only insert in the XI in certain games.
