It was earlier announced by the Federal Government of Nigeria that linking of SIM cards with NIN (National Identification Number) is important and compulsory for all citizens in Nigeria.
Two sources have reached out to our media outlet to reveal that the linking of SIM cards with NIN is about to be cancelled. The cancellation is coming after the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, got called out for having a link with Boko Haram and Al-Qaeda.
The first source says that in order to make Nigerians happy and forget about the issue of Isa Pantami link with the terrorist groups, he wants to cancel the linking of SIMs with NINs. The source says that NIN might only be compulsory for those who will start buying new SIM as from Monday.
“Isa Pantami is about to make the linking of SIM cards with NIN not to be compulsory again due to the attacks he’s been receiving on social media. The same way registration of SIM cards were announced surprisingly, that’s how linking of SIM cards will be cancelled surprisingly but will be done (cancellation) in a cunny way,” the first source says.
The second source says the telecommunications in Nigeria are currently feeling the heat of losing many customers when SIMs are eventually blocked (those who didn’t link theirs). The second source says,
“The telecommunications in Nigeria are gradually feeling the heat of losing numerous customers from these linking of SIM cards with NINs. The panic amongst the telecoms is too much.”
