Ângelo Gabriel Borges Damaceno, known as Ângelo Gabriel or simply Ângelo, is a Brazilian footballer who plays for Chelsea as a winger.
How good is Angelo?
The young Brazilian has been part of Santos’ senior set-up since early 2021, making his debut for Neymar’s former club as a 15-year-old and beating Pele’s record as the club’s second-youngest debutant by 11 days in the process.
He went on to make more than 120 appearances for the club, but despite playing as an attacker, the 173 cm (5 ft 8 in) youngster only scored five goals for the club. He also provided 10 assists.
Though clearly not the most prolific forward ever, Angelo is nevertheless an exciting talent because of his explosiveness and desire to take people on in the dribble. He’s more of a creator than a goal-scorer, playing mostly on the right wing, which allows him to cut inside onto his stronger left foot.
Born in Brasília, Federal District, Ângelo joined Santos’ youth setup in 2015, aged ten.[2] In July 2020, aged only 15, he started to appear for the under-20s, being subsequently promoted to the main squad in October by manager Cuca.
On 23 October 2020, Ângelo agreed to a professional pre-contract deal with Peixe, effective as of his 16th birthday. He made his professional debut two days later, coming on as a second-half substitute for Lucas Braga in a 3–1 away loss against Fluminense for the Série A championship;[6] aged 15 years, 10 months and 4 days, he became the second-youngest ever player to debut for the club, only behind Coutinho, and overcame Pelé by 11 days.[7]
Ângelo made his Copa Libertadores debut on 9 March 2021, starting in a 2–1 home success over Deportivo Lara;[8] aged 16 years, 2 months and 16 days, he became the youngest Santos player to appear in the competition, surpassing Rodrygo.
“I see a lot of potential in Angelo,” Argentine coach Holan, then the head coach of Santos, told SporTV. “He has a huge future. By working hard, he will be able to play not only at Santos, but I believe that, in the future, he will be able to play in major leagues around the world.”
Such ringing endorsements have become commonplace for Angelo Gabriel. Gabriel is already the third-most valued U17 player in the world, behind Gavi and Moukoko (Source: Transfermarkt), despite playing in a less-reputed Brazilian league. That speaks volumes of his potential.
