Gibson Gathu Mbugua, who played the role of prosecutor in Vioja Mahakamani, dies of kidney-related complications, family confirms.

Gibson underwent a kidney transplant in July of 2022. In August this year, Mbugua underwent kidney transplant at a hospital in Eldoret.

“Good morning friends and family… This morning I have received a phone call from Mediheal Hospital informing me that our brother Gibson has rested. It’s been a journey but in all God is still on the throne,” his family said.

Mr Mbugua was admitted to hospital in July after well-wishers, led by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, came through for him in a fundraiser. A total of Sh6 million was raised for his treatment.

After a successful surgery, he expressed his gratitude to all well-wishers who supported him with the hospital bill.

He particularly thanked the then Head of State Mr Kenyatta for donating Sh2 million as well as his colleagues Lucy Wangui (Magistrate), Mathias Keya (Alfonse Makacha Makokha) and Hiram Mungai (Ondiek Nyuka Kwota).

“I am so thankful to Kenyans who came through for me. I could never appreciate them enough,” he said.

In an earlier interview, the actor had disclosed how his treatment for kidney failure had depleted his family’s finances.

He narrated how costly dialysis treatment had driven him and his family over the edge leaving them helpless and with no choice but to appeal for funds from Kenyans of goodwill to finance his surgery and post kidney transplant treatment.

“Dialysis treatment is costly. It exhausts your medical insurance cover and you start digging deep into your pockets. Insurance cover is limited. You have to undergo dialysis three times in a week and each visit you pay from Sh10,000,” he said.

The veteran actor had been ailing from diabetes for more than 20 years, and in 2021, the family announced that his kidneys had failed.

The family appealed to Kenyans to contribute towards a kidney transplant procedure that Gathu was to undergo.

A major fundraiser was held in June 2022, where former President Uhuru Kenyatta contributed Ksh 2 million towards settling the hospital bill. In August 2022 , Gathu updated his fans that the Kidney transplant was successful and he had since been discharged.

“I have been in hospital since July 18, 2022, and I was discharged on August 3, 2022. I feel so good,” he said. Mbugua had been a fan favorite in Vioja Mahakamani, known for his no-nonsense approach to cases as a prosecutor. In June, President Uhuru Kenyatta had donated KES 2 million to Mbugua towards his treatment and post-surgery care.

In an earlier interview, the actor revealed how kidney failure had drained his family’s finances ever since he was diagnosed.

He painfully described how the high cost of dialysis treatment had put him and his family in a desperate situation, leaving them with no other option but to make an appeal for money from Kenyans of good will to pay for his surgery and post kidney transplant treatment.
