Football fans around the world have been left confused and even disappointed after they spotted photos of 18-year-old South Sudanese goalkeeper, Godwill Yogusuk Simon representing his country at the ongoing Under-20 AFCON in Egypt. The goalkeeper was in action on February 23 and his brilliant performance helped his country to an historic 1-0 win over the Central African Republic (CAR).
The encounter was challenging for Ladan Bosso and his wards, who had the home fans against them. However, it was a must-win for the Nigerians, who lost to Senegal in their opener. The Flying Eagles succeeded however, giving themselves a good chance of progressing to the next round of the competition depending on the outcome of their final group game.
Sports Brief spoke to top Nigerian journalist, Bayour Issah about the appearance of the Sudanese goalkeeper and claims about his age. ”The fact is that we all know Simon can never be an under-20 player and that is the problem we are having as Africans and the reason European players have longer careers than ours.” ”I will blame CAF for this because this is an embarrassment.”
