1. Malaysian contractor Leonard Glenn Francis, also known as Fat Leonard, has reportedly escaped house arrest in the US.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Francis cut off his GPS anklet on Sunday, and police arrived at his home to find it empty.
2. US authorities have begun a manhunt for Francis, who is believed to have planned the escape.
The Union-Tribune reported that Francis’ neighbours have seen moving trucks going in and out of his home in the days leading up to the breakout.
3. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that Francis has crossed the Mexican border.
Francis, who ran the Singapore-based military contracting firm Glenn Defense Marine Asia, pleaded guilty to bribing US Navy officials in 2015 in exchange for contracts.
4. He was accused of supplying officers with cash, prostitutes, as well as expensive cigars and alcohol.
He was released on a medical furlough due to various health issues, including kidney cancer, and has been on house arrest since at least 2018.
5. Francis had been working with federal prosecutors as a cooperating witness in building cases against other individuals implicated in the major bribery and fraud scheme.
He was due to be sentenced on September 22.
