Vince Staples speaking on festivals and how some artists don’t know how to perform:
“Are you making a show to entertain people or are you making a show to boost your ego?”
He says he learned how to create a better show from Chance the Rapper while they were both opening up for Mac Miller: “You have to create a show that’s for people that are passing by…The way he incorporated dancing, Lauryn Hill, and intertwining things that didn’t have much to do with him [since he was still relatively unknown at the time] but the fans understood it and he made sure he was entertaining, by the time he got to the bigger stages he was a proven performer.”
Vince also mentioned that part of the problem is that sometimes artists with 1 or 2 hits will blow up without a catalog:
“Learning how to tour, you have to have bodies of work…You don’t even have a full set with these 2 min singles…we need more full length projects.”
I think Vince is absolutely right, artists need to hone their craft and improve their live performances through practice so they’re ready for the big stages when they get there.
