An 83-year-old woman in Kluang has died after eating puffer fish, while her husband is in the ICU.
Johor Health exco Ling Tian Soon says the couple purchased the fish via social media from a seller on Facebook, and suffered breathing difficulties after eating it on 25 March.
“They cleaned and cooked the fish for lunch. And around 3pm, the woman started shivering and having breathing difficulties,” says Ling.
About an hour later, her 84-year-old husband also began displaying similar symptoms.
The woman was pronounced dead at around 7pm on the same day she consumed the fish.
Ling notes that four other customers who bought the fish have yet to consume it, but the Health Department has obtained samples of the fish from the seller for analysis.
