President Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan, on Sunday, August 15, fled the country, as Taliban insurgents take over the presidential palace in Kabul, the country’s capital, after capturing 26 of the country’s 34 provincial capitals in less than two weeks. (Read More Here).
The insurgents who said they are seeking a ‘peaceful transfer of power’, are preparing to declare birth of the ‘Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan’, which was the name of the country under the Taliban government ousted by US-led forces after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks.
Reuters news agency reports that this comes after US, British and others evacuated their diplomats from the country.
Foreigners in Kabul have been told they should either leave or register their presence with Taliban administrators.
