A 53-year-old man in Germany has been cured of HIV after receiving a stem cell transplant in 2014, according to medics from Düsseldorf University Hospital.
He is the fifth person overall to be cured of this condition.
The man, referred to as the “Düsseldorf patient”, has no detectable traces of the virus in his body despite stopping his medication in 2019, the medics said.
A transplant replaces unhealthy blood cells with healthy ones from blood or bone marrow.
The researchers hope that the information they gained will help more studies into cures for HIV.
