13 people fought to keep their names sealed however were unsuccessful.
The names of more than 150 people linked to Jeffrey Epstein could be revealed after a New York judge ordered a new batch of documents in a lawsuit against his co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell unsealed.
Judge Loretta A. Preska ordered the documents to be unsealed on Jan. 1, giving those mentioned more than a week to appeal their case.
In the 2015 lawsuit, Virginia Giuffre accused Maxwell, Epstein’s long-time paramour, of facilitating years of sexual abuse at the hands of Epstein that began when Giuffre was 16.
The judge described two of the three people whose names will remain sealed — J. Does 58 and 124 — as “classic outsiders peripheral to the events at issue” who are not associated with Epstein and Maxwell. A third, Doe 133, was mistakenly identified in a photo, according to the judge, who noted that Doe was characterized as “an alleged perpetrator” by a reporter. The judge did not further elaborate on her decision.
But even those considered “peripheral” to the case should be made public at this juncture, said Christine Walz, a partner at the law firm Holland & Knight, which has represented the Herald.
In many instances, the judge noted individuals who had given interviews to the media. Some documents will remain sealed because they name minor victims of abuse who have not publicly been identified.
Maxwell was sentenced to 20 years in prison earlier this year for her role in Epstein’s routine sexual abuse of multiple underage girls over a 10-year period.
He was found hanging by the neck in a New York jail cell in August of that year in what was ruled a suicide.
Most of the victims were high school girls from Palm Beach, where Epstein owned a home.
Senior U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska on Monday ordered the final cache of names unsealed in two weeks, allowing a 14-day window for appeals.
